Dr. Melmer is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services at Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as the Director of Surgical Simulation for the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety as well as the Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency.

Originally from Fauquier County, Virginia, Dr. Melmer completed both his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Virginia. He went on to complete his general surgery residency at Grand Strand Medical Center/Mercer University in South Carolina before returning home to Richmond for a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at VCU. He has also pursued advanced training in robotic surgery, further expanding his expertise in minimally invasive approaches to complex surgical disease.

Dr. Melmer’s clinical interests include trauma, emergency general surgery, and robotic surgery. He is deeply committed to surgical education, with a strong dedication to simulation-based training and a genuine passion for mentoring trainees and learners at every stage of their careers.
